One method to sharpen a hook, hold the sharpener between your thumb and index finger, with the red end (down) at your thumb. Using light pressure, place the hook point in the V of the sharpener close to the black end, and draw the hook away from the point in a downward direction. Test after a few passes and adjust the angle if necessary. Continue a few strokes at the time until the hook is sharp.

Apply a couple of drops of oil every now and then, particularly if you notice rust forming.
